Background
About El Velódromo
The Story
Bar Velódromo opened in 1933 on Carrer de Muntaner, close to Diagonal, a new café-bar decorated in warm tones and wood in a blend of classic and Art Deco styles. Over the decades its clientele shifted with the city: civil-servants during the Civil War years, intellectuals and political writers in the post-war period, and the Gauche Divine set in the 1960s and 70s. Cerveses Moritz (Barcelona's historic brewery, founded 1856) acquired the space in 2000 and reopened it in 2009 after a long restoration that preserved the Art Deco bar room. Today it still runs as a neighbourhood bar-restaurant, with a continuous kitchen from early morning to the small hours and direct access to unpasteurised Moritz from the brewery tanks.
The Cuisine
The carta is traditional Catalan bar cooking, published under the house line 'La Cuina del Velódromo'. House classics include macarrons de rostit (macaroni with roast chicken and pork, gratinated with béchamel and cheese), caneló de tres carns, fideus a la cassola with pork rib and botifarra, arròs cremós de calamar, bacallà amb samfaina, and suquet de rap. The tapas section leans heavily on croquetes (ham, squid, calçots-romesco, pumpkin-spinach-ginger, sold singly or as a four-piece assortment), braves, bunyols de bacallà, esqueixada de bacallà and ensaladilla rusa. A dedicated 'amb cervesa' section pairs dishes with Moritz beer, including mussels steamed in Moritz 7, veal cheek braised in Moritz Epidor and meatballs in Moritz Negra. The house 'cheeseburger de l'Alkimia' is a nod to the restaurant's gastronomic advisor.
The Team
Gastronomic direction is by chef Jordi Vilà of Alkimia, Barcelona's Michelin-starred restaurant, as disclosed on the house website. The bar is owned and operated by Cerveses Moritz, which restored the 1933 premises and reopened them in 2009. The kitchen runs continuously from opening to close, with a separate breakfast menu served until noon. Unpasteurised Moritz beer is served directly from the brewery tanks, a tap available only at this address.

El Velódromo Dining Experience
The original 1933 Art Deco bar room is still in place: pale wood panelling, warm lighting, a long bar running the length of the room and Moritz taps at the centre. The continuous kitchen means the space shifts through the day, from breakfast fórmules served until noon, to lunch with the neighbourhood, to evening tapas and late-night sandwiches. A terrace on Carrer de Muntaner adds outdoor tables in good weather (with a 12% surcharge). The defining drink is unpasteurised Moritz straight from the brewery tanks, available only here.
