Cal Siscu
Cal Siscu
Founded 1933. Cal Siscu is a no-frills market seafood restaurant in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, steps from Barcelona. Originally a wine bodega, it has been serving exceptional seafood for three generations.
Background
About Cal Siscu
The Story
Cal Siscu was founded in 1933 by Francisco 'Siscu' Rosés as a bodega selling bulk wine and liquors, with canned seafood the only food on offer. When Siscu's son Antonio 'Toni' Rosés and his wife Dolors took over, Dolors began cooking fresh seafood, transforming the bodega into a proper restaurant. After Siscu retired in 2011, Constantino 'Tino' Cabo acquired the restaurant, preserving its deliberately old-school character while maintaining the commitment to exceptional raw product. Three generations later, the marble-topped tables, paper placemats, and bare-bones decor remain unchanged, proof that when the fish is this good, the room doesn't need to try.
The Cuisine
Cal Siscu is a market-driven seafood restaurant where the daily catch dictates the offering. There is no written menu, staff present the day's options verbally, guiding diners through whatever arrived from the Mediterranean and Atlantic markets that morning. Signature dishes include lobster caldereta in aromatic tomato sauce with almonds and hazelnuts, cuttlefish with beans, monkfish marinera with fried eggs, chickpeas with sea cucumbers and fried eggs, mussels in spicy tomato sauce, and whatever shellfish the counter displays that day: Palamós prawns, Galician clams, goose barnacles, oysters, and sea snails.
The Team
Owner Tino Cabo oversees operations with genuine passion for the restaurant's atmosphere and heritage. Head chef Vicenç leads the kitchen, with Carme running front-of-house, described by regulars as deeply dedicated, with a personality as strong as the lobster caldereta.
