Background
About Tatel
The Story
TATEL is a project of Mabel Hospitality, with restaurants beyond Madrid; the Madrid venue on Paseo de la Castellana is operated by Madrid Leisure Partners S.L. Its own site plays up an Art Deco space that opens onto a terrace and gallery, live shows every day of the year, and a cocktail bar inspired by the speakeasies of 1920s Prohibition America.
The Cuisine
The kitchen's own framing is 'alta gastronomía': traditional Spanish recipes given a modern touch. The menu runs to dishes it brands as its own, from oysters to a signature milanesa, and the bar keeps a separate cocktail list themed on 1920s speakeasies.
Tasting menu
A tasting menu, with or without wine pairing, available Monday to Thursday and booked at least 24 hours ahead, runs: bread with tomato, olive oil and garlic; a salt-cod buñuelo, a Cinco Jotas bellota ham croqueta and finely sliced bluefin tuna; artichoke flower with Iberian ham and egg yolk; grilled monkfish loin with pil pil; slow-cooked glazed beef rib with mashed potato; and a pineapple 'ingot' with lemon sorbet and the house cheesecake.

Tatel Dining Experience
The draw is the room and the show: an Art Deco space with a terrace and gallery, cocktails taken seriously, and live performances built into the night. It's set up for groups and a big night out rather than a quiet dinner.

Castellana is the business spine of the city, where the eating is built for lunches that are really meetings. The rooms are confident and well run rather than experimental, and they hold their prices without apology. It runs on past Salamanca and Puerta de Alcalá without ever relaxing.
