Background
About Shanghai Mama Las Tablas
The Story
Shanghai Mama runs five restaurants in and around Madrid: Las Tablas, Cuzco (Infanta Mercedes), the Gran Café on Gran Vía, Pozuelo and Alcalá de Henares. All share the same home-style menu based on the culinary culture of China and the dishes of Shanghai, and they also do takeaway pick-up, delivery and private events.
The Cuisine
Home-style Chinese with Shanghai at its heart. Dim sum is handmade: crispy vegetable shaomai, xiao long bao filled with meat and black truffle (or secreto ibérico on the set menu), har gau with prawn and ginger, and Sichuan-style gyozas. The signatures are ku bak, a crispy rice dish finished at the table, and the Shanghai Mama crispy duck, alongside crispy prawns with wasabi cream, spring rolls, chow mein and fried rice.
The Set Menu
The 'Shanghai Mama' tasting menu at €25 a head takes in xiao long bao with secreto ibérico, crispy prawns with wasabi cream, vegetable spring rolls, fried rice, crispy duck in almond sauce and dessert or coffee, a good way to try the house hits in one go.

Nearby
Las Tablas is one of the newest parts of Madrid, a planned development in the far north of the Fuencarral-El Pardo district built up with office towers and modern apartment blocks. The eating scene here is still thin and mostly serves the working day, with little of the density found closer to the centre.
