Background

About Sa Marinada

The Story

Sa Marinada sets out to be a homage to the Costa Brava in the middle of Madrid: a small room of just 12 tables where the point is fresh produce straight from the coast, without frills. The house works with local fishermen, and its wild fish and shellfish come from the lonjas of Palamós and Roses, alongside produce from the Empordà countryside. Its website quotes the Empordà writer Josep Pla on the virtues of simple cooking.

The Cuisine

Mediterranean and seafood-led: fresh fish and shellfish from the Costa Brava lonjas, given a technical, contemporary finish in the venue's own description.

From the Lonja

The heart of the carta is the day's catch, priced by the market: small coastal chipirones on sweet onion with minted broad beans, griddled sepionetas, medium Palamós cigalas flambéed in Armagnac, mini razor clams, cockles and carril clams steamed in seawater, rock mussels in cava, and by the kilo, Palamós red prawns, wild Mediterranean blue lobster and red spiny lobster. Starters include red-prawn croquetas topped with marinated Palamós prawns, Roses anchovies with pan de cristal, a wild-fish and shellfish soup, sea bass and scorpionfish cannelloni, and carpaccios and tartare of Palamós red prawn and cigala.

Rices and Mar i Muntanya

Rices and fideuà are made for at least two: a dry red-prawn rice with its carpaccio and romesco, creamy rice with Palamós cigalas, a house rice with wild fish, lobster rice at market price, and a suquet of monkfish with cigalas, clams and mussels. The Empordà's mar i muntanya tradition shows up in small squid stuffed with butifarra and rovellón mushrooms in romesco, and there are meat options too: aged-beef meatballs with squid, grilled butifarra de payés with ganxet beans, and boned Duroc trotters with red prawn. Dogs up to 10kg are welcome, and the restaurant closes for part of August.

Getting There

It's on Calle de Fernández de la Hoz, in the Almagro barrio of Madrid's Chamberí district, the city's quiet, embassy-lined quarter.

Nearby

Almagro is embassy Madrid: broad streets, old money, and a hush the rest of the centre does not have. The restaurants match, with polished rooms, careful service and kitchens that do not need to shout. It sits between Chueca and Salamanca without quite belonging to either.
