About La Penela
The Story
La Penela on Velázquez is the Madrid arm of a Galician family group. The Simón-Barallobre family opened their first La Penela in 1989 in a small restaurant outside Betanzos, 25 km from A Coruña, and success came so fast that three years later they opened another on A Coruña's Plaza de María Pita. The group went on to informal Taberna Da Penela rooms, events at the Pazo de Villar de Francos near Carballo, this first Madrid restaurant, the Ocafú taverns, the Pazo de Ximonde winery in the Rías Baixas, and La Penela restaurants in Bogotá and Barcelona. Family members still often serve in the dining rooms. It's listed in the Guía Repsol.
The Cuisine
Traditional Galician, cocina de raíces. The group buys fish and shellfish daily at the A Coruña lonja, grows its own potatoes and legumes, and bottles its own albariño, the Albariño Barallobre from the Pazo de Ximonde in DO Rías Baixas. The menu is on the venue's own site.
The Tortilla and the Roast Veal
Two dishes carry the name. The Betanzos-style tortilla, the town's famously runny version, is the house's most emblematic plate, made by mixing good home-reared eggs and carefully grown potatoes in the right proportions. The other is the ternera asada La Penela, veal roasted slowly, which the house calls its speciality. Around them sits 'cocina de raíces': fish cooked just right, such as hake a la romana or in caldeirada and black monkfish medallions, simple salads of garden tomato with bonito, and the shellfish bought daily at the A Coruña lonja. Every product for the group passes through a single central point for quality control before reaching the restaurants.
The Room and the Wine
The Velázquez restaurant occupies a corner with big windows in the Barrio de Salamanca, with modern décor in separate spaces, rooms seating up to 150 and two private dining rooms, and there's public parking nearby. Set menus for groups are available on request from the maître. The house white is the family's own Albariño Barallobre, a single-estate wine made and bottled at the Pazo de Ximonde, near Santiago, in DO Rías Baixas; the winery also makes a second albariño, Antonio El Cruel.
