Background

About El Viejo Almacén de Buenos Aires

The Story

El Viejo Almacén de Buenos Aires was founded in 1977 and has kept the porteño spirit it opened with for more than forty years. It's run today by César Ruda, the second generation; the empanadas are still made to his mother's recipe. You're greeted at the door by a recorded voice saying '¡Ché, qué bueno que viniste!', and the rooms are full of photos of customers, football memorabilia (a shrine to Diego Maradona included), tango lyrics and bandoneons.

The Cuisine

An Argentine grill whose real speciality is meat, chosen for quality rather than origin and aged no more than 35 to 40 days: Argentine novillo (Aberdeen Angus raised on pampas grass, flown in chilled), Uruguayan novillo and vaca vieja, around fourteen cuts in all. Starters are the classics: the house empanadas (beef, spinach, cheese and onion), grilled heart sweetbreads with lemon, and provoleta. Sides are chips, salsa criolla and fried sweet potato, and the cheesecake is made with fresh cheese and dulce de leche.

Tango Every Night

There's live tango every night, with songs such as 'Caminito', 'Volver' and 'A media luz' on the evening's programme, and on Fridays and Saturdays a couple dances too. The house suggests ordering everything to share, cuts included, served from mildest to most intense, so you can try more. There's an enclosed summer terrace.

Butcher's Shop and Takeaway

The restaurant runs an online butcher's shop selling its Argentine and Uruguayan beef, vaca vieja, empanadas, sausages and offal, grilling cheeses, wines and asado packs. Dishes can be ordered for pick-up (you can send a courier), and there are group menus and gift cards.

El Viejo Almacén de Buenos Aires Dining Experience

The room is the point: decades of Argentine memorabilia line the walls around a shrine to Diego Maradona, and live tango runs through most evenings, with songs like Caminito and Volver carrying the room. There's an enclosed terrace as well, and the restaurant has kept that porteño feel since it opened, more than forty years ago.
