Literal Coffee
Literal Coffee is a small specialty coffee shop on Calle de las Huertas, in Madrid's Barrio de las Letras, where, in its own words, everything is handmade on site. The most-ordered plate is sourdough with whipped ricotta, Mayak eggs, chilli oil and dill; there's shakshuka, brownies and sponge cakes, and cheesecake at weekends in the cooler months. Batch brew rotates through guest roasters, beans are sold to take home, and matcha comes with plant milks including pea milk.

Cortes sits between the parliament and the museums, so the pavements carry politicians, visitors and locals in roughly equal measure. The eating covers everything from cocktail rooms to serious kitchens, often behind doors that give nothing away. Congreso de los Diputados and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza bookend it.
