Background

About La Santoría

The Story

La Santoría opened in early 2020 in the Barrio de las Letras. Its hosts met serving drinks in Buenos Aires and scouted Bilbao, San Sebastián, Santander and Barcelona before opening in Madrid. The look borrows from Latin American santería and popular saints, Gauchito Gil, the Difunta Correa, Ceferino Namuncurá and the Virgen de la Huachana among them, with holy cards, coloured rosaries, customised crucifixes and other pagan imagery around a bar that doubles as an altar.

The Cuisine

Cocktails rather than food. The menu calls them potions, 'conjuros' with names like Baño de abundancia, Ven a mí and Quédate conmigo, and the bartenders take time to explain each one; if you'd rather not tempt fate, classics such as an Old Fashioned or a Negroni are there too. To snack on there's hummus or nachos. Drinks start at around €11.

Getting There

It sits on Calle de Lope de Vega in the Barrio de las Letras, the old literary quarter of Madrid's Centro district, with the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums nearby.

Nearby

Barrio de las Letras is the old literary quarter, narrow and atmospheric, with quotations set into the paving. The eating is unusually varied for so small an area, from taverns and cocktail bars to kitchens working at a serious level. Museo del Prado and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza are on the doorstep.
