About Tasca Barea
The Story
Tasca Barea opened in 2017 on the corner of Calle de Rodas and Embajadores, set up by Benjamín and Jaime, neighbours who missed a tasca pouring draught vermouth and working with good artisan products made with care and social conscience. The name nods to the writer Arturo Barea, whose barrio this was, and the bar has become a Sunday classic after the Rastro. Next door, at Embajadores 38, its sister shop Comestibles Barea sells the products of local producers, family businesses and artisans, and hosts a rolling calendar of tastings, catas and hands-on workshops, bookable online and sold as gifts. It holds a Repsol Solete.
The Cuisine
Spanish tapas with a Murcian streak. The marinera, ensaladilla topped with an anchovy on a crisp rosquilla, is the house tapa alongside the vermouth, and the counter runs on to gildas, Cádiz-style chicharrones, peppers and ensaladilla. Priced for an easy, casual evening rather than an occasion.

Tasca Barea Dining Experience
Casual and local, a neighbourhood tasca where the vermouth is poured cold and the room is relaxed and warm. There are cocktails and natural wines on the list, dogs are welcome and vegetarians are catered for, and most weeks there's a tasting, a cata or a workshop on the calendar.

Tasca Barea is on Calle de Rodas in Lavapiés, part of Madrid's Centro district, a mixed, multicultural pocket of the old centre.
Nearby
Lavapiés is a steeply layered corner of central Madrid, a tight grid of narrow streets where the cooking comes from everywhere at once. The rooms are small, the prices are honest, and the good ones fill with regulars rather than reservations. Museo Reina Sofía and CaixaForum Madrid sit uphill from it, El Rastro at the bottom.
