Background

About Casa Paco

The Story

Casa Paco began in 1870 as a classic wine taberna of cards and dominoes on Plaza de Puerta Cerrada. On 3 March 1933 Francisco Morales, Paco, and his wife Rosario refounded it under the Casa Paco name and turned it into a casa de comidas and meeting place for cattle dealers, jewellers, coal merchants, bullfighters, writers and the antique dealers of the Rastro, who are credited with starting the Entierro de la Sardina procession from here. The founder's line is still quoted: give quality and good food, and don't worry about charging. It carries the Ayuntamiento de Madrid's Comercio Centenario plaque, Establecimiento Centenario status from the Comunidad de Madrid and a Medalla al Mérito Artístico, and holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol.

The Cuisine

The house dishes the venue names are callos a la madrileña, cocido madrileño, cebón de buey and patatas Casa Paco: the traditional Madrid taberna register, done straight. At the bar it's vermouth, chicharrones and gordal olives with a cold beer, plus pinchos, roquefort and huevos rotos; there are daily set menus at lunch.

Casa Paco Dining Experience

Small and snug, and lively with it. Cosy and traditional with the energy high, which in practice means a room that fills fast and stays loud, and it's fair value for what it charges.

Getting There

Casa Paco is at Plaza Puerta Cerrada 11, in La Latina, in Madrid's Centro district. Go by the Puerta Cerrada address.

Nearby

Sol is the dead centre of the city and behaves like it, busy and walked through by everyone heading somewhere else. The trick is knowing which doors are worth stopping at, because rooms built for visitors sit right beside ones locals have used for decades. Círculo de Bellas Artes and Edificio Metrópolis mark the smarter edge, towards Chueca.
