Background

About Una Mica de Japó

The Story

Una Mica de Japó (Catalan for 'a little bit of Japan') opened in la Nova Esquerra de l'Eixample as a family-run izakaya devoted to Japanese home cooking. The owner Michiko-san serves dishes inspired by her hometown of Fujiyoshida, at the foot of Mount Fuji, with her family running both the dining room and the kitchen. The restaurant has built a quiet reputation among Barcelona's Japanese community and local food writers as one of the most authentic, no-frills Japanese kitchens in the city.

The Cuisine

The kitchen serves Japanese home cooking and izakaya tapas, deliberately no sushi. The signature is the daily bento box, a tray of small dishes that changes with the kitchen's mood and the market. Other staples include gyoza, korokke (potato croquettes), kushikatsu (breaded skewers), tori teriyaki don, katsudon, salted mackerel, grilled sardines with rice and beef sukiyaki. Desserts include matcha cake and castella sponge.

The Team

Michiko-san leads the small family team, with Shinya cooking and other family members helping in the dining room. The operation is intentionally compact and unhurried, more neighbourhood kitchen than restaurant.

A tiny, casual room of around eight tall tables with stools and a few bar seats, with menus hand-written on signs hanging from the ceiling. The mood is unfussy and family-run, closer to a neighbourhood izakaya in Japan than a polished Barcelona restaurant.
