Abissinia is one of Barcelona's longest-running Ethiopian dining rooms, tucked on Carrer del Torrent de les Flors in la Vila de Gràcia. Owner Rahel Berhe serves food the traditional way, stews and injera laid out across a single shared tray, eaten by hand from low benches around mesob baskets.

Background

About Abissinia

The Story

Abissinia has been introducing Gràcia diners to Ethiopian food for over two decades from a small address on Carrer del Torrent de les Flors. Owner Rahel Berhe runs a no-plates, no-cutlery table service in the tradition of her home country, everyone eats from the same platter, scooping stews with injera.

The Cuisine

Ethiopian cooking built around injera (a fermented-wheat sourdough flatbread) and berbere, a house 22-spice blend that defines dishes like Meserkek lentils, Dorowot chicken, and Segawot beef. Vegetable stews (Aterkek split peas, Duba pumpkin, Kosta chard) outnumber meat dishes, and everything is slow-cooked over low heat with no microwaves or freezers.

The Team

Owner Rahel Berhe runs the kitchen with a philosophy she sums up as "feed your health from the kitchen, not the pharmacy." She cooks with fresh, local, in-season products, no chemicals, no microwaves, no freezers, always over low heat.

How to Book Abissinia

Booking

Abissinia serves lunch and dinner every day except Tuesday. The dining room is small and fills quickly on weekend evenings, so phone reservations are recommended, especially if ordering the Ketfo, Selsi, or Shiro specials, which require 24 hours' notice.

Experience

Abissinia Dining Experience

Low ottoman-style stools surround hourglass-shaped straw mesob baskets used as tables, with African textiles, zebra-print artwork, and hanging pierced-metal lanterns. The room is small, warmly lit, and designed for hands-in, shared eating rather than individual plates.
