Background

About Vegania

The Story

Vegania grew out of Daniel Sánchez's long vegan path. He started cooking as an activist in 1997, running community kitchens and charity dinners for NGOs and animal-protection groups, and in 2003 opened what the restaurant describes as the first vegan bar-restaurant, also called Vegania, in Leganés. Since then he has run a vegan online shop, vegan stores in Madrid and Barcelona, a restaurant near Ópera and the Vegan Rock bar in Rivas-Vaciamadrid. This Vegania opened in Carabanchel in summer 2018, and holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol.

The Cuisine

Entirely vegan comfort food made from natural ingredients, with dishes that change with the seasons: homemade burgers and bocadillos served with chips and sweet-potato fries, starters and cold plates, rice dishes, specialities and homemade desserts.

The Carta

Burgers and sandwiches run about €12.90 to €14.50: the No Meat burger with vegan 'bacon' and melted 'cheese', a homemade oat, tofu and sun-dried tomato burger on brioche, a seitan kebab in stone-baked pita, and a vegan 'calamares' bocadillo with alioli; the over-the-top 'La Guarra' double burger is €19.90. The specialities include nachos with chilli sin carne, pad thai with tamarind and coconut milk, shiitake a la feira on herbed potatoes with paprika oil, and a vegan morcilla with almond, raisins and baked apple served with tomato and olive-oil ice cream (€14.90). Desserts have included a brownie with tangerine ice cream, a white chocolate and coconut cremoso and a vegan 'cheesfake'. At Christmas there's a house roscón.

Hours

Vegania opens Thursday to Saturday for lunch and dinner and Sunday for lunch, and closes Monday to Wednesday. Book by WhatsApp or on 911 30 52 36; there's also home delivery.

Getting There

Vegania is on Calle de Nuestra Señora de la Luz in the Vista Alegre area of Madrid's Carabanchel district.

Nearby

Vista Alegre takes its name from the bullring on Avenida Plaza de Toros, a historic ring now used for concerts and events as much as bullfighting. The surrounding streets, split across the Carabanchel and Latina districts, are residential and modest, with neighbourhood bars and family kitchens serving a mixed, largely Latin American community.
