Taberna del Chato is a tapas taberna on Calle de Andrés Mellado, in the Argüelles end of Chamberí. The gimmick is in the name: many of its tapas come in small glasses, or chatos, alongside Basque pinchos, montados and plates to share. The brand started in 2012 in the Barrio de las Letras with an affordable, informal take on tapas, and runs group menus with drinks included from €26.

Background

About Taberna del Chato

The Story

Taberna del Chato calls itself a personal project that began in 2012 in a small tavern in the Barrio de las Letras. Its take on tapas, served in small glasses called chatos, is where the name comes from. The idea, in its own words, is simple, honest, affordable food where people feel at home and share a good time.

The Cuisine

The menu is built to share: a wide range of tapas served in chatos, Basque pinchos, montados and plates. Traditional standards like huevos con jamón, croquetas and calamari sit next to more gourmet turns such as the house steak tartar, with Spanish beers, wines by the glass, cocktails and sangría to go with them.

Groups and the Huertas space

Groups of 8 to 70 are a big part of the business. Three sharing menus include drinks through to dessert: the Cocktail at €26 (bravas, ham croquetas, duck gyozas, crispy chicken), the Casa at €34 (adds prawn skewers, secreto ibérico and golden cod) and the Especial at €40 (with bellota ham and artichokes with ham). Intolerances and vegetarian or vegan diets are adapted case by case. The group also runs La Escuela Taberna del Chato, an industrial-style cooking classroom on Calle de las Huertas 43 for team-building, birthdays and tastings.
