Background

About La Taberna de Moncloa

The Story

La Taberna de Moncloa's own description, signed in Madrid on 12 October 2000, calls it a public house where no football match is ever shown, nor any other sport, and where the 'tabernícolas monclovetenses' keep turning up regardless. It sells beer, 'very well pulled, if I may say so', plus wine, vermouth and cider.

The Cuisine

Classic Spanish taberna food: breakfasts, tostas, salads and raciones built on eggs, Burgos morcilla, chorizo, Iberian ham and boquerones, nearly all served with pan tumaca, plus a weekday and a weekend set menu.

Breakfasts and Tostas

Breakfasts are named and cheap: the Clásico with toast, butter and jam and a coffee is €2.50, the Chamberí is toasted bread with olive oil and salt, the Cantabria comes with condensed milk, and the Atapuerca ('¡toma carne!') is pork tenderloin with mustard and a coffee or beer for €6. The tostas run €6 to €7, mostly solomillo, morcilla or fried chorizo with combinations of brie, bacon, cabrales, peppers and caramelised onion; the Tosta Especial Taberna stacks tenderloin, mustard, bacon, brie, pepper and caramelised onion.

Raciones and Set Menus

Raciones are mostly €10 to €18: homemade ham and cheese croquetas, huevos rotos with Iberian ham or morcilla, lacón a la gallega, Burgos morcilla with fried green peppers, a potato, chorizo and pancetta stew, scrambles of ajetes or bacalao, Cantabrian-style squid rabas, pisto manchego with fried eggs, Iberian ham, and a 'rueda de ahumados' of 20 smoked-fish canapés. The house jokes that its boquerones are frozen 'following Ministry of Health rules'. The menú del día is €9.90, with a second and third course, bread, a drink and coffee, and the weekend menu is €12.90.

Experience

La Taberna de Moncloa Dining Experience

A neighbourhood taberna with a sense of humour: its own blurb, dated 12 October 2000, says it never shows a football match, not even 'the match of the century', and the regulars keep coming anyway. Beer is the thing it brags about, along with wine, vermouth and cider. Good for groups and dogs.
