Background

About La Cantina

The Story

La Cantina's story starts in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, in 2006, with the aim of keeping the soul of the traditional Mexican cantina alive: a place where time stops, conversation flows and the toast is the point. The Madrid outpost on Calle de Ponzano calls itself a precopeo and restaurant, and its line is blunt: not a restaurant, not a taquería, a cantina.

The Cuisine

Mexican, built for sharing. Starters run from guacamole made to order (with torreznos if you ask) and street-style elotitos to peanut aguachile with prawns and blue-corn tuna tostadas. Tacos cover red and black al pastor off the trompo, a crisp potato cochinita pibil, aged-beef gaonera and soft-shell crab.

From the grill

A brasa section carries the bigger plates: pescado zarandeado in a Nayarit-style adobo, house-made mole with veal tongue, an aged beef entrecôte and a chimichurri chicken. Sides like frijoles puercos and Mexican rice let you build out the table, and desserts include a baked plantain and a tres leches cake.

The bar

The drinks list is long on agave, with tequilas from Siete Leguas and Cascahuín to Don Julio 1942 and Clase Azul, and mezcals including Montelobos and 400 Conejos, poured in 25 ml measures. Mexican beers like Modelo, Pacífico and Colimita sit beside wine by the glass.

Experience

La Cantina Dining Experience

It insists it's neither a restaurant nor a taquería but a cantina, the kind of place where conversation and the toast come first. It bills itself as a precopeo spot too, so evenings lean towards drinks, and late on Thursday to Saturday. Tables are set up for sharing and groups.

Getting There

On Calle de Ponzano, 60, in the Ríos Rosas part of Chamberí, a residential grid north of the old centre.

Nearby

Ríos Rosas is a working residential grid north of the old centre, where restaurants answer to the people who live there rather than to visitors. It sits nearer Estadio Santiago Bernabéu than anything touristic, and the eating is unhurried, mid-priced and quietly confident. This is where you go for a proper lunch without theatre.
