Cafelito is a coffee shop in the heart of Lavapiés, born there in 2014, and it holds a Repsol Solete. It calls itself a Colombian grandmother's living room, furnished with recovered pieces, and it grinds every cup to order from a fair-trade artisan roast. House 'rarezas' include Café Campesino, a family recipe with panela, honey and cinnamon.

Background

About Cafelito

The Story

Cafelito opened in the heart of Lavapiés in 2014 and styles itself as a Colombian grandmother's living room, a calm, authentic refuge decorated with recovered furniture. Each cup starts from scratch: they grind the bean to order for a fair-trade artisan roast.

The Cuisine

The coffee comes from the mountains of Cauca in Colombia, where the AMUCC project supports women coffee growers; it's a fair-trade artisan roast, ground to order. Alongside the standard cups, the bar pours house 'rarezas' like Café Campesino (panela, honey and cinnamon), a chocolate-injected Magdalena Espresso, and the summer 'Cafelito,' an iced latte served in a teapot with a secret touch of spices.

Experience

Cafelito Dining Experience

Cafelito reads as a refuge: recovered furniture, a book exchange kept going by neighbours and travellers, and a welcome jug of water before your first sip. It is dog-friendly, and the pitch is slow conversation over a cup rather than a quick takeaway.

Getting There

Cafelito is on Calle Sombrerete, in the Lavapiés neighbourhood of Madrid's Centro district.

Nearby

Lavapiés is a steeply layered corner of central Madrid, a tight grid of narrow streets where the cooking comes from everywhere at once. The rooms are small, the prices are honest, and the good ones fill with regulars rather than reservations. Museo Reina Sofía and CaixaForum Madrid sit uphill from it, El Rastro at the bottom.
