Penedès
Catalan wine region southwest of Barcelona, the heartland of cava production and a serious zone for both white and red still wines.
The Penedès is the largest wine region in Catalonia, a stretch of rolling hills and high plateaus between Barcelona and Tarragona. It's best known internationally as the place where most cava is made (Sant Sadurní d'Anoia is the cava capital), but it also makes a wide range of still wines under its own DO Penedès label, plus a separate Classic Penedès certification for traditional-method sparkling wines produced exclusively in the region. The native grapes are Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada for whites and Garnacha (Garnatxa) and Cariñena (Carinyena) for reds, alongside international varieties planted from the late 20th century on.
How it's served
As wine: Penedès whites cold (8-10°C), reds at 16-18°C. As a wine-tourism region: most of the major producers (Codorníu, Freixenet, Torres) run cellar tours roughly an hour by train from Barcelona, with cava tastings at the end.
Regional variation
The Penedès is split by altitude into three subregions. Baix Penedès (low, near the coast) makes ripe, fruit-forward wines. Mitjà Penedès (middle, where most cava is made) is the wine-grape heartland. Alt Penedès (high, up to 800m elevation) makes the freshest whites and the longest-aged sparkling wines.

Frequently asked
What wines come from the Penedès?
Most of Spain's cava (the country's traditional-method sparkling wine), plus a wide range of still whites and reds under the DO Penedès label. Native grapes are Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada for whites and Garnacha and Cariñena for reds, alongside international varieties.
What's the difference between DO Cava and DO Penedès?
DO Cava covers a wider area across Spain but most of it is made in the Penedès. DO Penedès is a region-specific appellation for still wines made anywhere in the Penedès. A third label, Classic Penedès, is for traditional-method sparkling wines made only in the region, with stricter aging rules than basic cava.
Can you visit Penedès wineries from Barcelona?
Yes. Sant Sadurní d'Anoia (the cava capital) and Vilafranca del Penedès (the wine capital) are both about 45 minutes by direct train from Barcelona-Sants. Major producers like Codorníu, Freixenet and Torres run cellar tours; smaller estates require booking.
