Rafa De Andrés co-chefs and co-owns Casa Rafa, the Madrid seafood restaurant his father Rafael De Andrés and uncle Rodrigo De Andrés opened in 1958, alongside his cousin Miguel Ángel De Andrés. Rafael De Andrés had left his hometown, Aguilar de Anguita in Guadalajara, at age 14 to work in Madrid's hospitality trade. The restaurant, on Calle de Narváez near El Retiro, holds a Repsol Guide Sol and built its name on nationally sourced Spanish fish and shellfish. In 2024 the Academia Madrileña de Gastronomía gave the De Andrés family its Lifetime Achievement award.

Biography

Early years

Rafa is the son of Rafael De Andrés, who co-founded Casa Rafa in 1958 with his younger brother Rodrigo De Andrés. Rafael Sr. had emigrated to Madrid from Aguilar de Anguita, in Guadalajara, at age 14 to work in hospitality, and the two brothers opened their bar beside the offices of the newspaper Diario Pueblo, whose staff became early regulars.

Career

Rafa now co-chefs and co-owns Casa Rafa with his cousin Miguel Ángel De Andrés, Rodrigo's son, continuing the seafood restaurant their fathers built on Calle de Narváez, 68, near El Retiro. The restaurant holds a Repsol Guide Sol, and in 2024 the De Andrés family received the Academia Madrileña de Gastronomía's 'Reconocimiento a Toda una Vida' (Lifetime Achievement award) at the VIII Premios de Gastronomía de la Comunidad de Madrid, held at the Real Casa de Correos in Madrid.

Philosophy

Rafa has described the menu as built entirely on Spanish product: as he put it, everything bought for the restaurant is national fish and shellfish, not imported seafood.
