Carles Gaig is the fifth-generation chef behind one of Barcelona's longest-running restaurant families, traced to Taberna d'en Gaig in 1869. He runs Petit Comitè in la Dreta de l'Eixample — a Repsol-Sol Catalan restaurant — alongside Restaurant Gaig. The family's 150-year-old cannelloni recipe remains the group's signature dish.
Biography
Early years
Gaig was born into a restaurant family with roots in Barcelona reaching back to 1869, when his ancestors opened Taberna d'en Gaig. He grew up around the family stoves and is described as the current patriarch and fifth-generation Gaig chef, working alongside his wife Fina Navarro and daughter Núria Gibert.
Career
In 1989 Gaig transformed the century-old Taberna d'en Gaig into Restaurant Gaig — the turning point that brought the family's traditional Catalan cooking into a contemporary fine-dining register. Today the Gaig group runs Restaurant Gaig and Petit Comitè in Barcelona. Petit Comitè, located on Passatge de la Concepció in la Dreta de l'Eixample, carries one Repsol Sol; Carles Gaig directs the kitchen, with Sergi Clapés and Josep Armenteros leading the day-to-day stove. The Gaig signature cannelloni — a 150-year-old recipe traced to the original tavern in 1869 — appears across all the family's restaurants.
Philosophy
Gaig's cooking is rooted in Catalan tradition translated through modern technique. Heritage recipes — most famously the Gaig cannelloni, passed down from his mother and great-grandmother — anchor the menu, with seasonal Catalan product used in dishes that aim to feel both familiar and contemporary.
