Cafetería San Siro has served Ballermann's German tourists since 1966

Cafetería San Siro has been serving tapas on the Schinkenstraße, the German nickname for a stretch of Playa de Palma's Ballermann strip, since 1966, and the business is still run by the same family. Owner Laura Mestres Mut, 37, leads the restaurant in its third generation, Mallorca Magazin reports. She and kitchen chief Raúl González Moral run a kitchen and service team of 17, several of whom have been there for two or three decades: "Ich habe noch viele der Leute hier, die seit 20 oder 30 Jahren bei uns arbeiten" ("I still have a lot of people here who've been working with us for 20 or 30 years"), Mestres Mut said.

German tourists remain the core of the business. "In der Hauptsaison sind ungefähr 90 Prozent unserer Kunden deutsche Touristen" ("In high season, around 90 percent of our customers are German tourists"), Mestres Mut said. The mix flips outside summer: "In den Wintermonaten verändert sich die Situation, da sind es vorrangig und zu 80 Prozent Spanier" ("In the winter months the situation changes, when it's mostly, around 80 percent, Spaniards"). Many German regulars have been coming back for two decades, she said: "Viele kommen sogar seit 20 Jahren hierhier, sodass wir sie mit Namen kennen" ("Some have even been coming here for 20 years, so we know them by name").

The menu still centres on tapas, pinchos, chorizo, ham, calamares, croquetas and boquerones, with ham portions priced at 11 to 15 euros depending on the cut. Three years ago the bar added a kebab stand alongside its Spanish menu. Mestres Mut puts the longevity down to consistency: "Ich denke, wir sind uns selbst einfach treu geblieben und haben nicht ständig alles verändert" ("I think we've simply stayed true to ourselves and haven't constantly changed everything"), she said.
