Llampuga season under way in Cala Rajada, with prices down from €15 to about €10 a kilo

Mallorca's 2026 llampuga (dolphinfish, also known as mahi-mahi) season is under way, running from 31 August to 31 December, weather and fish stocks permitting, according to Jaume Fuster's "Sa pella pes mànec" column for Cap Vermell. It's a tightly regulated fishery: each boat can land up to 150kg of fish, five days a week. Cala Rajada, which the column calls the island's most important port for llampuga catches, has seven boats working the season this year.

Prices at shops and markets have already eased, from around €15 a kilo in the season's early days to about €10 now, the column says. Opmallorcamar sets that 150kg limit per boat and day, while the EU now assigns Spain a llampuga quota of 127 tonnes for a maximum of 45 vessels, the column adds. Last season, 35 boats from across Mallorca landed a total of 123,197kg of llampuga, worth €694,067.50 in sales, according to Opmallorcamar's official figures cited in the column.

The column credits self-regulation and the outreach of the Mostra de la Llampuga de Cala Rajada, now in its 22nd year, with turning an under-appreciated fish into one that regularly appears on local menus, adding that the event has helped highlight the range of dishes llampuga can be cooked into.
