Ca'n Biel Felip, one of Palma's last classic variat bars, closes after 30 years

Ca'n Biel Felip, a small bar in Palma's Cas Capiscol neighbourhood built almost entirely around one dish, the variat, closed for good in late July 2026 after more than three decades in business. Ultima Hora reported the closure on 27 July, noting that word came first through the bar's own Facebook page: "Todo llega a su fin. Ca'n Biel Felip también" (everything comes to an end, and Ca'n Biel Felip too).

Biel Roca Joan opened the bar in 1994, according to AraBalears, and built its name on the variat, a mixed plate of Mallorcan bar classics, alongside dishes like frit de sang, pig's trotters, and tongue with capers. The formula worked: in May 2026, Tapas Magazine named it one of Spain's best 'Bares Clásicos' for 2026, and the best in the Balearic Islands.

Roca, 73, told Ultima Hora in mid-July that a shortage of staff had already forced the bar to close its kitchen at midday, cutting lunch service despite a loyal following. He said he had stretched out his own retirement hoping to hand the bar to someone who could keep it going, but that it was time to rest. No successor came forward. When the bar posted its farewell, the message read in part: "después de tantos años entre fogones, ha llegado el momento de descender la persiana y despedirnos de una etapa que ha marcado nuestras vidas" (after so many years at the stove, it's time to lower the shutters and say goodbye to a chapter that has marked our lives), signing off with "¡Viva al variado!" (long live the variat).
