Balearic Islands launch their bid to be a European Region of Gastronomy in 2030
On 1 October 2026 the Balearic Govern presented the islands' candidacy for European Region of Gastronomy 2030, signing up to IGCAT's platform. It is a candidacy, not the title.
The Balearic Islands have formally entered the race to become a European Region of Gastronomy in 2030. The Govern presented the candidacy on Thursday 1 October, and the signing of the protocol to join IGCAT, the body behind the European Regions of Gastronomy, put the islands on its World Region of Gastronomy Platform as a candidate. This is the start of a bid, not an award.
IGCAT says the candidacy would bring together the food cultures of Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera and builds on Menorca's year as European Region of Gastronomy in 2022. The Govern's stated aim is a cohesive image of the islands' food and wine culture, with local produce as a reference for quality and authenticity. Agriculture and fishing are meant to sit at the centre: farmers and fishers are represented on the candidacy's executive committee, according to Agriculture minister Joan Simonet.
There is groundwork already. Next Generation EU funds paid for a 2025-2035 wine and gastronomy tourism strategy, a web portal, an app and a catalogue of experiences. Tourism minister Jaume Bauzà said the bid "no es una acción aislada ni improvisada" ("is not an isolated or improvised action") but the result of two years of rigorous work.
What happens next is IGCAT-led: the islands will now work with IGCAT and other Regions of Gastronomy on a long-term programme for 2030. We will report if the bid moves forward.
