Background

About Akipan

The Story

Akipan has served Ecuadorian food in Madrid since 2014, trading as Akipan Cafetería. It sets out to keep the flavours, aromas and colours of Ecuador's regional cooking, aiming, in its own words, to make you feel like you're in Ecuador without leaving Madrid.

The Cuisine

The carta spans Ecuador's regions: coastal plates like encebollado, ceviche de camarón and arroz con camarón; highland dishes such as hornado, mote and menestra; plus a bakery turning out pan de yuca and tres leches. A menú del día changes daily.

Prices on the carta

Breakfast is a coffee with a pastry or toast for €1.90, or €2.50 with a fresh juice. Snacks such as empanadas, bolones, tortillas de verde and humitas cost €6 to €7, and the daily dishes listed online, like encebollado or bolón with seco de carne, are €9 to €10. Larger platos fuertes and soups run €14 to €19, and tropical fruit shakes in eleven flavours, from curuba and lulo to tomate de árbol, are €6.

Bakery and daily menu

The bakery starts baking at 6am, with pan de yuca made with yuca and cheese among the breads, and pastries for breakfast and merienda. The menú del día changes every day; the restaurant answers questions about it over its website chat.

Experience

Akipan Dining Experience

Akipan calls itself a cafetería as much as a restaurant, and the setting is built for families and groups. It opens early and stays open through the day, so it works for breakfast pastries as much as a full Ecuadorian lunch. The cooking is home-style rather than formal.
