Background

About Taberna de Antonio Sanchez

The Story

Nobody knows exactly when Taberna Antonio Sánchez opened, but it was already a wine shop before February 1787, when its sale as a business was advertised in the Diario Curioso, Erudito, Económico y Comercial, and a 1749 cadastral plan shows the same building with the tavern in the same space. In 1884 it was bought by Antonio Sánchez Ruiz, son of well-known taverners, and it has carried his name ever since. His son, the bullfighter Antonio Sánchez Ugarte, inherited it and turned it into a meeting place for figures such as Pío Baroja, Sorolla, Marañón, Camba, Cossío, Juan Cristóbal, Vázquez Díaz and Antonio Díaz-Cañabate. It still bills itself as the oldest tavern in Madrid, and the period interior, bullfighting décor and all, is largely intact. It holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol.

The Cuisine

Traditional Madrid tavern cooking with a few modern touches, built on quality produce: cocido madrileño, callos, rabo de toro, garlic rabbit, Ibérico charcuterie and the house torrija. The carta changes with the seasons and is published on the website.

Getting There

Calle del Mesón de Paredes 13, in Embajadores, between Tirso de Molina and La Latina metro stations, in old working Madrid. El Rastro spills through the surrounding streets on market days.

Nearby

Embajadores is old working Madrid, dense and unpolished, and it rewards anyone willing to walk its side streets. The eating runs from taverns that have been there for generations to newer rooms doing something quite different. El Rastro spills through it on market days, and Lavapiés is the same conversation continued uphill.
