## Introduction

CLOS, the Michelin-starred wine restaurant in Ríos Rosas, opens its dining room onto a garden behind the open kitchen. Los Galayos, a tavern right off Plaza Mayor since 1894, sets its tables onto the square itself. Filandón cooks over an open wood fire inside El Pardo forest. This list covers 18 Madrid restaurants with a genuine terrace, garden, courtyard or plaza table built into the restaurant itself, not a rooftop bar with a skyline view.

## A guide to Terraces in Madrid

### What counts as a terrace restaurant in Madrid?

A terrace restaurant, in the sense this list uses it, is a kitchen with real outdoor seating built into the dining experience itself: a garden, a courtyard, a plaza-facing terrace or a forest setting. That's different from a rooftop or azotea restaurant, where an elevated view over the city is the main draw.

### Terrace or rooftop: what's the difference?

A rooftop restaurant sits on an upper floor or roof, usually with a skyline view as its main feature. A terrace restaurant, in the sense this list uses it, sits at or near ground level, built around a garden, courtyard or square rather than height. Some Madrid restaurants have both a terrace and a separate rooftop space; this list sticks to the ground-level kind.

### Do Madrid restaurant terraces run all year?

Not always. Several restaurants on this list treat the terrace as a warm-weather extension of an indoor room, opening it seasonally rather than year-round, and a few close for part of August altogether. It's worth confirming terrace availability when booking outside the summer months.

### What kinds of outdoor settings are covered here?

The gardens, courtyards and terraces on this list range from a forest clearing to a Michelin-starred dining room's own back garden to a table set onto Plaza Mayor. A few sit inside converted palaces or historic institutions, including a former private library and an architects' college.

> "CLOS, a Michelin-starred wine restaurant, opens its dining room onto an outdoor garden, and Los Galayos has served cochinillo onto Plaza Mayor since 1894."

## How we built this list

We built this list from the Michelin Guide's own best-of roundup of Madrid terraces and from madridsecreto.co's guide to the city's terraces and gardens, cross-checked against the Madrid restaurants we've profiled. A restaurant made this list only if its own detail page documents a real garden, courtyard, plaza terrace or comparable outdoor space as part of what it is, not a passing line about outdoor seating with nothing else behind it. Several restaurants that came up in our source research, including Café del Nuncio, El Jardín de Arzábal and Boral Torcuato, don't have a Guidavera page yet or couldn't be matched with confidence to a documented terrace, so we've noted those as gaps rather than guessing. We also kept overlap with our rooftop and view restaurants list to a minimum, since a rooftop terrace with a skyline view is a different category from a ground-level garden or courtyard.

- **Website:** https://restauranteclosmadrid.es/

CLOS is sommelier and hotelier Marcos Granda's restaurant in Ríos Rosas, built around a serious wine cellar and named for the French term for a walled, high-quality wine estate. It won a Michelin star in 2019 under chef Víctor Infantes, and relaunched in late 2025 with executive chef Dani Villoria, who spent about fifteen years working alongside Dabiz Muñoz, including at DiverXO. The dining room is large, austere and light-filled, opening onto an outdoor garden and the open kitchen. There's no conventional carta: the menu runs as a conversation across six themed passages, with a communal seafood stew served to the centre of the table and a fire course finished over brasas. The table chooses between three, four or six passages, priced at €139, €169 or €199, with matching wine pairings. It's closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

It holds one Michelin star and two Repsol Soles, and was ranked first on Opinionated About Dining's 2022 list of the best new restaurants in Europe. La Paloma opened on 8 April 1992 on Calle Jorge Juan, founded by Segundo Alonso and Mariano Ávila; the name is a play on the names of their daughters rather than a nod to old Madrid. The cooking is Basque-French: acorn-fed Iberian ham, gratinated sea urchins with quail eggs and callos a la madrileña to start, then hake kokotxas in green sauce and oxtail braised in red wine, with a game section that runs on availability, from stuffed farmhouse pigeon to roast roe deer. The setting is as much the draw as the plates: elegant, intimate and quiet, with garden dining and a terrace. It's a top-end dining room, over €100 per person. The terrace is divided into three garden-inspired spaces. It's open daily, 1pm to 4pm and 7:30pm to 11pm, and spend runs around €40 per person.

## The Terraces scene in Madrid

Madrid's restaurant terraces split fairly cleanly by setting rather than by one shared style. A cluster of Michelin-starred kitchens, among them CLOS, Amós, VelascoAbella, Desde 1911 and Osa, treat a garden or terrace as part of the dining room itself rather than a separate space bolted on for summer. Historic addresses hold their own ground too: Los Galayos has served off Plaza Mayor since 1894, and Bosco de Lobos, an Italian kitchen inside the garden of the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid, and La Biblioteca Gresca, set inside the original library of the Marquis of Santo Mauro at Hotel Santo Mauro, both move service outdoors into a garden in the warmer months. A few sit inside grand courtyards rather than gardens: Raimunda serves from the Palacio de Linares, home to Casa de América, and El Patio de Atocha from an 1852 palace hotel, both built around fountains and greenery rather than lawns. That's a different category from the city's rooftop and view restaurants, where the draw is height and skyline rather than a ground-level table under trees or beside a plaza.

## Know before you go

### 1.

A few of these close for stretches of the year: Filandón takes a summer break in early to mid-August, and VelascoAbella closes for the whole month too. Confirm current dates before an August visit.

### 2.

Booking style varies a lot across this list. Osa and CLOS run fixed tasting-menu sittings that need advance booking, while Los Galayos and Bosco de Lobos take walk-ins for a more casual meal.

### 3.

Several terraces here are a warm-weather extension of an indoor room rather than a fixed year-round space, including La Biblioteca Gresca's garden. It's worth checking terrace availability when booking outside summer.

### 4.

Price ranges vary widely, from around €20 to €30 per person at Bosco de Lobos to over €100 at CLOS, Amós, Osa, Desde 1911 and El Jardín de Orfila.

## Glossary

- **Terraza** — Spanish for terrace, the word used for most of Madrid's outdoor restaurant seating, whether a garden, courtyard or street-side table.
- **Michelin Selected** — A Michelin Guide listing that meets the guide's standards but sits outside the star and Bib Gourmand tiers.
- **Repsol Sol / Solete / Recomendado** — Distinctions from the Guía Repsol, Spain's national restaurant guide. A Sol ranks above a Solete, which recognises good, honest cooking at accessible prices; Recomendado is a guide listing without a Sol or Solete attached.

## Frequently asked questions

### What counts as a terrace restaurant on this list?

A restaurant whose own detail page documents a real garden, courtyard, plaza terrace or comparable outdoor space as part of the dining experience, not a rooftop or an elevated view. Desde 1911's central garden and Los Galayos's tables onto Plaza Mayor are both examples.

### Is there a Michelin-starred restaurant in Madrid with a garden terrace?

Yes, several. CLOS, Amós, VelascoAbella, Desde 1911 and Osa all hold a Michelin star and describe garden or terrace dining as part of the room, with Osa running a dedicated five-course osa|terraza menu.

### Which Madrid restaurant terrace is set inside a forest?

Filandón, a wood-fired grill restaurant on the Carretera Fuencarral-El Pardo, sits inside El Pardo forest and describes itself as being in one of Europe's best-preserved Mediterranean forests.

### Is there a restaurant terrace right on Plaza Mayor?

Los Galayos has operated just off Plaza Mayor since 1894, with terrace seating onto the square itself alongside a formal dining room and a separate historic tavern.

### Which restaurant terrace has a pond or water feature?

Benares, the Michelin-recommended Indian restaurant in Chamberí, is built around an interior terrace with a water feature.

### Are there budget-friendly terrace restaurants in Madrid?

Bosco de Lobos, an Italian kitchen inside the garden of the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid, runs €20 to €30 per person. El Bund's terrace near the Chinese Embassy runs around €40 per person.

### Which restaurant terraces sit inside historic palaces?

Raimunda serves from inside the Palacio de Linares, home to Casa de América on Plaza de Cibeles, and El Patio de Atocha's courtyard terrace, with its fountain and small pool, sits inside a palace dating to 1852 on Calle de Atocha.

### Is Madrid's rooftop and view restaurant list the same as this one?

No. This list covers ground-level gardens, courtyards and plaza terraces; a separate list covers restaurants where an elevated rooftop or panoramic view is the draw, including Paco Roncero and Azotea del Círculo.
